The Municipality of the County of Richmond and the Town of Port Hawkesbury have launched of the Strait of Canso Sustainable Infrastructure Strategy, positioning the region as a future hub for renewable energy industries, including onshore wind, offshore wind, and green hydrogen and ammonia production.

The strategy has been shaped by extensive stakeholder engagement involving local businesses, industry leaders, and community members, with key participation from the Municipality of the County of Richmond, the Town of Port Hawkesbury, the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, the Nova Scotia Department of Energy, and Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). Commissioned in 2024, industry consultants Waterford Energy Services Inc. (WESI) assessed the existing port and industrial infrastructure in the Strait of Canso.
